Meet Brianda. She is married with 3 and 6-year-old daughters and lives in our Sunset Gardens apartments. She met her husband in high school and they had their first child while she was just 16. They moved into Sunset Gardens just after having the baby, making their rent payments manageable. While some girls might have quit school, Brianda knuckled down taking the science and math courses she excelled in at Hillsboro High School.
Brianda learned of Bienestar’s Education Navigation program for high school students, where she learned about career options and scholarship funding available for students. This had been her biggest barrier – not knowing how she might pay for college, especially with a child to care for. Through Education Navigation, she also learned about the Individual Development Account (IDA) program where her savings would be generously matched to apply toward education.
She was guided first into Portland Community College where she obtained her AA degree. She is now at Pacific University studying Chemistry with plans to become a pharmacist. All this is paid for through scholarships, her IDA, and her husband Salo’s hard work.
Your support of Bienestar has made this and other direct investments in the lives of our hard-working, low income, families.
Thank you from the Board of Directors and staff at Bienestar.
