Volunteers are needed to help out in after school programs for children in grades 1-6 to help them complete homework assignments and get extra help with school work.  Volunteers help with snacks, individual homework with students; reading with children.  You can volunteer for 1, 2 or 4 days a week between 3 and 5 p.m.  These opportunities are available at:

  • Montebello Apartments, Hillsboro

Monday and Wednesday from 3 to 5:00p.m.

  • Reedville Apartments, Aloha

Summer Lunch & Fun Program

We want to be sure that our resident children do not go hungry during summer days when parents are working and there is no school lunch program.  Through a partnership with the Hillsboro School District, we will be able to provide free lunches for children 1-18 in Hillsboro this summer from June 22 – August 14th.  Volunteers are needed to serve the food and to organize and coordinate activities for the younger children.  Hours are 11:30 – 1:30 Monday through Friday.  Volunteers ages 16 and up can sign up for one or more days a week, but for a minimum commitment of a 2 week period.

Summer Reading Safari

Our pilot summer reading program last year was so successful that we hope to expand it this year to operate in Hillsboro and in Forest Grove.  After only 6 weeks, children were able to improve their reading grade level.  Volunteers ages 16 and up are needed to receive training and help children in grades 1-6 with reading activities – individual, PC-based, and group.  Times and days to be determined in July and August.

Basketball Club

  • Elm Park Apartments, Forest Grove

Day and time to be determined based on volunteer/staff schedules

  • Reedville Apartments, Aloha

Friday afternoons from 4 to 6

Soccer Club

We need volunteers who would like to help kids learn to play soccer at our new soccer field at Sunset Gardens in Hillsboro.  There will be a girls and a boys group, and we need help with each – probably a commitment of 1.5 hours a week for 8 weeks.

  • Sunset Gardens, Hillsboro

Day and time to be determined based on volunteer/staff schedules

Adult Program Volunteer Opportunities

If you prefer working with adults, we’d be delighted to have your help.  Most of our resident adults speak Spanish only, so if you speak Spanish that would be a big plus.  We need help with:

ESL

________________________________________________________

We are seeking certified, experienced ESL instructors to help us with ESL classes for limited English speaking adults at various skill levels.  We will design classes around volunteer time and availability.

GED Classes

Our GED instructor needs volunteers to help adults who are preparing to take their high school equivalency exams.  Volunteers would help individuals or small groups with math, science, writing.  Classes meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays at Montebello Apartments in Hillsboro.

Job Club

Bienestar’s Job Club for residents who have been laid off meets on Wednesday mornings from 10 -12.  Volunteers are needed to help prepare resumes, conduct mock interviews, help complete applications, teach on-line job search, etc.  Most participants speak Spanish only, so Spanish language speaking skills are needed here.

Computer Classes

________________________________________________________

Adults will be learning very basic computer skills during evening classes this fall in the computer labs at our properties.  If you are interested in helping our staff instructor on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening, the classes will be held at:

  • Sunset Gardens, Hillsboro
  • Reedville Apartments, Aloha
  • Jose Arciga Apartments, Forest Grove

TRANSLATION SERVICES

________________________________________

If you have the ability to translate written English into Spanish, we need you!  We are looking for a volunteer who might be interested in a one-time project to translate our website content into Spanish.  We also seek volunteers who might be willing/able to translate board documents on an ongoing basis about 6 times a year.  This is a great chance to volunteer from home – all the work can be accomplished through email!
