Support Bienestar Youth Programs

Homework Clubs
We now have six Homework Clubs supporting Bienestar children. For nine months, youth grade 1st - 6th attend afterschool tutoring where they receive help with homework and literacy training. At the end of each term the coordinator analyzes report card grades and prepares an outcome report to measure the children’s progress. We are grateful for the support of Catlin Gabel H.S. Volunteers, Forest Grove Migrant Education Dept. and Pacific University’s work study grant.

Parents as Teachers
Bienestar’s Parents as Teachers (formerly Born to Learn) program teaches low-income Latino parents how to encourage their child's early cognitive development through interactive games, reading, socialization and nutrition. Parents receive training, information, supplies, and home-visits from our certified Parents as Teachers instructors while attending
monthly group sessions with their child.

Explorador Camp
Summer nature camp in partnership with Audubon Society of Portland offers one week of day camp activities and field trips for 96 children in grades 3-6. We were pleased to have grants received from the Gray Family Fund to support the camp since 2008.

Financial Fitness for Life

Bienestar children in grades 1-6 are offered 5 weeks of financial literacy training. Instructor Maria Moreno includes group activities and PC-based learning. At the end of the course each child is given a piggy bank, $8, and goes on a field trip to Wells Fargo to open a childrens savings account.

Education Navigation
 Education Navigation is a program for teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 and 20 (9th grade and above) who live in a Bienestar apartment. The pilot program was developed by an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer from the Oregon Microenterprise Network (OMEN) and was created to respond to requests for better access to post secondary education information,scholarships, and careers.

Kids Computer Club
Thanks Intel Volunteers who help in designing the program in 2010 we started a new computer club for children in grades 1-6. Bienestar has helped 18 kids to learn about Internet Safety, how to look for information using Google, how to make a power point presentation using text and pictures.

Summer Reading Safari
A pilot program summer reading program in 2008 ran for eight weeks for two groups – grades 1-3 and grades 4-6. Children attended twice a week for two hours. Hillsboro School District Reading Specialist Christie Ranslow designed a program that combined a variety of methods to improve reading skills. Staff and volunteers worked with the children on Reading Naturally, PC-based software, individual and group activities. In 2009 Ms. Ranslow trained staff to continue the program and it has been incorporated into our summer lunch and fun program.

PlayWrite
On August 24, 2010 eight inspiring, courageous, and deeply thoughtful plays were performed at the Walters Cultural Centerer in downtown Hillsboro. The writersand directors of these touching works of theaterwere teen residents of Bienestar properties.The performances were a culmination of hard work by the teen writers, PlayWrite writing coaches, and talented actors from the Portland area.

Mural at Sunset Gardens

Children ages 10-15 participated in anart clublearning drawing and painting under the direction of Isaac Alonzo, a resident who is a gifted artist from Mexico. A volunteer from Pacific University, Natasha Michalowsky, led a six-week program for resident children in grades 2 - 6 in Forest Grovein 2008. Title Artist Lynn Adamo directed children at Sunset Gardens in the creation of this mural for the Community Room.

Montebello Tile Mural

Children of Bienestar's Montebello and Sierra West Apartments in Hillsboro gathered around local artist Lynn Adamo to celebrate the new tile mural that they helped to create on the fence along 12th Avenue yesterday.Thanks to a grant from the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council, Bienestar partnered with artist Adamo to design a tile mural that would be compatible with the ceramic art at the 12th Avenue MAX station.

Former Bienestar resident Isaac Alonzo designed the artwork used on the tile mural while local artist and Bienestar supporter Lynn Adamo of Our House Tile Design, with her team of volunteers and Elm Park children carried out the fabrication of the project. Turning out to show support of the event were Forest Grove Mayor, Peter Truax and several members of the Forest Grove City Council. The Mayor spoke at the event, commending Bienestar for a job well done for many years and all expressed their continuing support of Bienestar’s presence in Forest Grove for ensuring that affordable farmworker housing is more than just shelter, but also creates community. The project was funded by the Regional Arts and Cultural Council.

Catlin Gabel highschool students and children from Reedville Apts. Homework Club, under the direction of visiting artist Christopher Jahncke, created painted wood fish for the property.

Dance Class
A dance class was implemented for children in grades first through eight living in the Reedville Apartments. The classes were led by Javier Urenda, Youth Program Coordinator, with the support of a high school student volunteer, Natasha Torres.

In the summer of 2012 we were able to introduce the Kids Music Club at Elm Park Apartments thanks to the donation from Guitar Center Eight kids attended this club.

Zoo to You

ZAP (Zoo Animal Presenters) is a paid 3 year internship program of the Oregon Zoo for low-income teens.Following training, the ZAP teens give live animal presentations all over the Portland metro area.The presentations are free to nonprofit organizations that serve families and children. Children at all our properties haveenjoyed theanimalssince 2009, and morethan 120 adults and children came to the presentations at Montebello and Reedville Apts. this year.

Youth IDA'S
Bienestar receives grant for new Youth IDA program
Bien-$tar-$avers
Bien-$tar-$avers is a youth Individual Development Account (IDA) program for children and teens who live in a Bienestar apartment. The Pilot program had 20 participants in the program ranging from grades 3rd through 12th.

An IDA is a matched savings account that enables individuals with limited financial resources to save and gain access to productive assets that they otherwise would be unable to afford. IDAs are about more then just gaining access to productive assets. Financial literacy training is an integral part these programs. All Bien-$tar-$avers participants complete more than 10 hours of financial literacy training in addition to developing savings habits, establishing relationships with financial institutions, and receiving a psychological boost of reaching a long-term goal. Bien-$tar-$avers encourages savings by matching participant deposits 3:1 when they are invested in the following areas:

Yoga Classes

Thanks to a generous grant from Nike which is supporting new programs for Bienestar children, a new yoga class was implemented for children in grades first through eight living in the Reedville Apartments. The classes were led by Javier Urenda, Youth Program Coordinator, whose position is funded in part by the Nike grant and with the support of Mayra Hernandez, a volunteer with three years of experience in yoga.
